What Is Sorare?

Sorare is a game for sports fans.

In Sorare, you build your team and compete against thousands of other managers every week. Your knowledge of players, competitions, and your ability to identify the potential of young players will enable you to earn money on Sorare.

Developed in 2018, the platform offers a simple game whose popularity has grown steadily over the years. Positioned between Mon Petit Gazon and Panini cards, Sorare offers a soccer game (now including NBA and MLB) perfectly in tune with the times, anchored in the crypto universe.

  • Star players at the click of a button.

What You Need to Know About Sorare

Sorare-5 is an online fantasy soccer game launched at the end of 2019.

It is one of the most successful projects in the Play-To-Earn (P2E) world. This French project was notably financed by Xavier Niel, employs soccer players such as Gérard Piqué, and has already signed licensing contracts with major European soccer clubs.

It raised 40 million euros in February 2021 to accelerate its development, notably with players such as Antoine Griezmann, before announcing the biggest fundraising in the history of French Tech to the tune of $680 million. The game is only available on Sorare.com but will soon be available as a mobile application.

To play the game and obtain rewards, it is preferable to acquire a minimum of 5 NFTs. Each tradable NFT is more or less a rare card of a real soccer player, which you can acquire either on the primary market (i.e., at auctions organized non-stop day and night by Sorare) or on the secondary market (i.e., directly from other players holding cards).

Payments are made in ETH (or by credit card). Sorare also allows you to buy ETH by credit card or bank transfer. Besides being collectible like a traditional Panini album, these cards allow you to take part in weekly competitions, in which your players’ real-life performances earn you in-game rewards. These rewards come in several forms:

  • ETHs.
  • Player cards (with an exchange value in ETH on the secondary market).
  • Physical gifts such as signed player jerseys or tickets to matches.

There are 5 categories of cards in Sorare, distinguished by their rarity. The majority of these cards are those of currently active players. There are also a few cards of managers (such as Zinédine Zidane) or legendary players (such as David Beckham), which may have collectible value, which the Sorare team plans to make usable one day.

How to Trade Sorare Cards

Legendary player cards can only be used in certain “Special Weekly” leagues. These legend cards have the particularity of obtaining a score equal to their team’s best score among players playing the same position. In other words, if you have the card of Ronaldo (the real one, as Mourinho says) of PSV Eindhoven, he’ll have the same score as PSV’s best striker that week.

The leagues currently offered by Sorare-5 are open to players under certain conditions, such as aligning cards from a certain geographical area or aligning cards from a certain category (e.g., minimum 3 cards from the Super-Rare category out of the 5 aligned). The winnings offered by each league obviously depend on the category (and therefore rarity) of the cards to be aligned.

Sorare’s player ratings are calculated on the basis of highly detailed statistics supplied by an independent company called Opta, well known to soccer scouts. A player who remains on the bench throughout the match will have a starting grade of 0/100, a player who comes on during the match will have a starting grade of 25/100 and a full-back a starting grade of 35/100.

When on the pitch, a player can gain or lose points according to his statistics. For more details on how Sorare calculates player points from Opta data, visit the Sorare FAQ section. The rewards for each league depend on the rarity of the cards required to participate.

Rewards can be ETHs, Sorare cards, or physical gifts. The number and amount of rewards offered each week depend on the number of matches played on the day in question (also known as GameWeek or GW). Indeed, the more matches played in real life, the more players can field full teams in Sorare, and the more rewards are offered to the valiant winners.

You’ll then be able to take part in the game as described above.

You’ll then be able to take advantage of your free cards. Please note that this tutorial is aimed at those who wish to enjoy Sorare in its soccer version. However, it’s also possible to use this platform for the NBA and MLB, which are two leagues on the other side of the Atlantic very popular with Sorare members.

How to Play Sorare

Sports Collectible Like Nothing Else

Once you’ve completed all the steps involved in registering with Sorare, you’ll have a few tasks to perform before you can start the real game and try to earn rewards every week. Below, you’ll find the steps you need to take in order to play Sorare.

First Tasks On Sorare

You’ll need to create your club and select your favorite teams.

Once you’ve done that, Sorare will provide you with a tutorial to help you understand how to play the game and get the most out of the platform. We’ll also explain the next steps.

Bear in mind when choosing your favorite teams, this decision will have an impact on the rest of the game and the cards obtained. So it’s best to turn to the big names in Europe for players with a high-end reputation. For example, opt for Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. In France, preference is often given to Paris Saint-Germain.

Buying Your First Cards

We’ll come back to this later, but once you’ve got the free cards, you’ll need to buy your first cards through auctions or by buying the players directly (often at a high price, but with the assurance that you’ll get them).

Creating Your Team

It’s high time to make your first lineup before the week’s matches! Free (casual) tournaments are available to allow players who don’t want to pay for cards to have fun on the platform.

However, in the quest for winnings, you’ll need to use paying cards most of the time if you want to take part in the very essence of the platform. Then, selected players will be scrutinized in real life, and their respective performances can earn you virtual or real money!

Most of the time, it’s advisable to place a starting goalkeeper in your team. This explains why goalkeeper cards are the most expensive, but a great performance from Manuel Neuer, Ederson, or Gianluigi Donnarumma could boost your score and, potentially, your winnings in the tournament.

How to Buy a Sorare Card

You’ll need MetaMask to interact with Sorare. Go to our Metamask tutorial if you don’t yet use the MetaMask application or don’t yet own ETH. Sorare also lets you pay by credit card. You need to choose one of these payment methods to be able to buy a card on Sorare.

After your free registration, Sorare will offer you a certain number of “Common” cards, enabling you to take part in the weekly “Rookie Leagues”. You’ll line up 5 of these cards each week and hope your players do well in the matches they play in real life.

Sorare’s cards are calculated by a third-party organization called Opta.

The scores of your 5 players are added to your team score, which is compared with that of other managers. Managers with the highest scores are offered rewards such as cards in a higher category. These cards can then be sold for ETH on the secondary market or used to participate in higher-level leagues (which offer far greater ETH and card rewards than the Rookie league).

However, many players prefer to invest their money in the game by buying cards of higher categories right away so that they can take part in leagues offering higher payouts.

Some even make a living out of it!

Cards are divided into 5 categories. The rarer the card, the higher the payout. There are:

  • Common—offered at registration and unlimited in quantity
  • Limited—1000 per player per season
  • Rare—100 per player per season
  • Very Rare—10 per player per season
  • Unique—1 per player per season

The majority of new cards are marketed via auctions in which all players can participate. It is through these sales that Sorare collects the ETHs that are redistributed to the best players in its leagues each week. The rest of the new cards are offered to the best players in the leagues each week. Once purchased (or earned), a card can be used throughout a player’s career.

How to Get Started With Sorare

Each card, whatever its category, is a unique NFT in its own right, held on the Ethereum blockchain. It has a serial number, a history (who bought it, when, etc.), and a certain level of experience, depending on its use in the Sorare game. The more this card has been used, the higher its experience level (rated out of 20) and the better its performance.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Game

With such popularity, it’s not always easy to get started playing Sorare.

Worse still, it’s not uncommon to come across bad advice and, intrinsically, to make the wrong choices because of ill-intentioned people. We’ve already given you some tips on how to get the most out of Sorare and how to stack the odds in your favor, but we’d like to take the opportunity of this Sorare guide and review to offer you three tips that will make all the difference.

Get ready; we’re taking you to the three points!

Check Player Statistics

A former glory of the past may not always be the best player to buy on a budget.

Soccer (or basketball and baseball) connoisseurs often have a head start, as they’re able to unearth the nuggets that shine every weekend on the pitch—where the big stars see their playing time reduced along with their involvement. So, player statistics and rising stars will be your best ally in winning and ensuring you make the right choice when bidding or buying.

Don’t Underestimate Rare Cards

It may sound logical, but rare or collectible cards are not always put to good use. In fact, the rare card championship is very interesting, since it takes into account the player’s score rather than his or her ranking. The technique of long-term investment with interest in rare cards before resale is probably the best way to make money on Sorare.

Watch the Small Leagues

While it’s essential to take an interest in major leagues such as the Premier League or La Liga when you sign up, you need to broaden your horizons afterward. Second-tier leagues, which are full of nuggets, can also help you earn precious points every week in the tournaments in which you take part. Always, with holders to choose from!

Is Sorare Trading an Easy Way to Make Money?

It’s a question everyone asks, and yes, if Sorare didn’t offer the chance to make money, many of the platform’s players would have opted for classic virtual leagues. Unsurprisingly, buying and selling or trading is the best way to make money playing Sorare.

The process is particularly simple, but it can clearly be time-consuming since it requires a thorough check of the market and the art of spotting certain offers. We explain how to make money by trading certain cards on Sorare.

How to Trade On Sorare

Sorare

  • Plenty of rewards to be won
  • Star players at the click of a button.

The advantage of trading on Sorare is that, with a little knowledge and the right picks, you can make a profit no matter how much capital you have. Generally speaking, you should aim for limited cards and, once you’ve got more capital, for rare cards.

As you can see, you have two options: trading in quantity or trading on very rare cards that are much more complex to sell. The technique is bound to be an advantage for connoisseurs of the world of soccer, but all investors can try their hand at it by visiting the Sorare “market.”

You’ll find all the offers listed and where you can set the selling price or the price of your choice.

This is where you’ll find all the offers listed, and where you can set the sale or auction price for the cards you own and wish to sell.

What Devices can Sorare be Played on?

For many years, Sorare was only available in its web version.

The year 2023 has been beneficial, and building on the notoriety of this P2E game, Sorare is now available via its official mobile apps, namely on iOS and Android. The experience has been particularly well-received by players with scores in excess of 4.5/5 on both operating systems.

When it comes to trading on Sorare, however, the web-based version remains the best way to get a clear view and make the right choices.

Our Opinion On Sorare—What Do We Think of This NFT Game?

As you’ll have gathered from this guide, our opinion of Sorare is decidedly positive. The recent opening to NBA and MLB proves just how popular this platform is becoming, and it’s highly likely that it will seek to enter other markets, such as American soccer or rugby.

Of course, this remains a pay-to-earn game with a real possibility of addiction. So we need to be vigilant about this as with any gambling or cryptocurrency investment. On this point, the possibility of playing with free cards also increases our interest and those who especially like sports and the very idea of the platform around cards or orange ball personalities!

From a financial point of view, the future looks pretty exceptional for Sorare, and among all the features mentioned throughout this Sorare review, there’s no doubt that something like this should once again charm players. The amounts of some of the cards are staggering, and just when you thought it wasn’t going to last, the opposite happens.

In short, we loved our extensive test of Sorare. The team enjoyed selecting their players and trying their utmost to put together the lineup of their dreams. Sorare shines through its collaborations, and for fans of sports and crypto, match weekends are never the same.
